FIRSTLY, the homeland of Palestine was TAKEN AWAY from the Palestinians (look up any info of the history, also on cnn and bbc websites). Israel was created from the homeland of the Palestinians i.e. Israelis are occupiers.
SECONDLY, after being deprived of their land, the Palestinians were placed in refugee camps, for more than 3 generations!
THIRDLY, the Israeli/occupiers of the “refugee camp” had put blockades against basic necessities such as food and medicine, i.e. denying the Palestinians basic human rights.

If all three' events' above occur to you, wouldn't you want to throw stones and fire old rockets to your more formidable, sophisticated occupiers?

It always amazes me how little knowledge of the past individuals who decide to post to these boards hold. Gaza and the West Bank were never part of a Palestinian state. In fact, there were no Palestinians until after 1967 when Egypt and Jordan refused to take in the Arabs living in Gaza and the West Bank, thus creating the Palestinian identity. It was an intentional move made to create another weapon against Israel. The Arab leaders at the time have publicly stated as much. That move has obviously backfired. Now Israel fights against a group dedicated to its complete destruction, that uses UN Schools and facilities to attack (an article was just published today about how UNRWA has admitted to hiring Hamas and Islamic Jihad members to work in their schools!!!). Yet, there are people out there who think there will ever be a peace agreement with Hamas in control of the West Bank and installing Sharia law, and what is essentially an Islamic Theocracy with no civil rights.

Now to correct some obvious lies put on these boards.

Oh, and over 50% of Israels population is from the Middle East and North Africa... people seem to forget about the more than 200,000 Jewish refugees kicked out of countries like Iraq when Israel was reestablished, even when they had no desire to leave. People trying to equate Israel killing 1000 Palestinians, the majority of which ARE Hamas, is nothing remotely similar. What they don't say is that members of the rival Fatah group, that Hamas executed are counted in that total etc...

Anyone with knowledge of any kind can simply look at Kosovo during the 90's and then see just how ridiculous the demonizing of Israel has become.

The economy in the West Bank grew exponentially last year. Why? Because Fatah recognizes Israel, respects previous agreements and renounced violence. If Hamas were to do the same, Gaza would be much better off, as would the Palestinian people. We all know Hamas smuggles weapons in from Iran to attack Israel, however if they really cared about the plight of the Palestinian people, wouldn't they be smuggling in food and medical supplies instead? WAKE UP WORLD!!! As long as Hamas is who they are and do what they do, there will not be a two states living side by side in peace and security.

Why? Are you kidding me? The UN is the only resupply depot Hamas has left. Maybe if the UN would stop resupplying the terrorist in Gaza this war could come to quick conclusion. No cease fire until all of Hamas is either dead or captured.

Gaza has 1.5 million residents and is considered one of the most densely packed places on earth. The rough biased estimate provided by Palestinians is that 1,010 have been killed, half of which THEY say are Hamas.

So in 3 WEEKS of bombing and "sieging" one of the most densely populated areas of land on the planet, roughly 500 civilians have been killed. You said yourself that Israel has some of the most advanced weaponry available... Thus... either Israeli troops have incredibly poor aim resulting in way fewer deaths than they intend OR the IDF is going through great pains to avoid civilian casualties while Hamas openly admits to using human shields. Like I mentioned before, look at Darfur, Russian action in Chechnya, Somalia, the Kosovo War and wake up! You obviously have either been brainwashed or just don't live in reality. Do you even know what a janjaweed militia is? Or how they were created? It is very clearly you who has no idea what's going on.

In Congo a few weeks ago, 400 civilians were massacred in a church in one night. In Gaza over a 3 week period it is alleged that 500 were killed... Now you tell me how you can possibly justify anything you said. Israel could quite easily just carpet bomb the entire area and obliterate everyone, but they DON'T. Why? Because Israel values life. Hamas preaches and values death. That's why they plant IED's next to gas stations with the intent of destroying entire neighborhoods, the civilian population with it... And last, those very same UNWRA people today admitted that they actually have employed Hamas and Islamic Jihad members at their schools and compounds... so no wonder the mortars and such are being launched from them.

Professor... calling yourself "Professor" does little to support intelligence, as what you write lacks an indication of it thereof. Muslims have killed each other more than anyone in history have killed anyone. Sunni and Shiite consistently murdered each other throughout history since the day the Prophet Muhammad passed. "It's the Occupation... Stupid" is a clever line however the "Three No's" given by the Arab League after 1967 at the Khartoum Summit doesn't really help your case either. And terrorism against Israel existed well before it captured the land in the 1967 war, heck, it's even one of the causes OF the 1967 war! So in response, I'll use another quote...
"The Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity." This defines the situation in Gaza particularly after Israel left. Instead of building an economy and creating a viable atmosphere for the creation of a state, Hamas sabotaged the interests of the Palestinian people to serve their own Islamist agenda and commitment to the destruction of Israel. History does not lie. This is recent. You don't have to like it, but it is what happened.

The basic objective of any warring party is to inflict maximal damage on the enemy while minimizing its own casualties. Was there anything proportional about the British waging war in the Falklands? An Israeli woman in her eighth month of pregnancy and her four daughters were killed this afternoon when two terrorists opened fire at Israeli cars traveling on the Kissufim-Gush Katif road in the Gaza Strip. Soldiers shot the terrorists dead, but only after an explosive device at the scene detonated, wounding three soldiers, two of them with moderate-to-serious injuries.

The victims of the attack were identified as Tali Hatuel, 34, and her daughters Hila (11), Hadar (9), Roni (7) and Merav (2). Tali's husband was not in the car at the time of the attack, ynet reported. The Hatuels lived on the Gush Katif settlement of Katif.

The Hamas terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the terror attack, Channel Ten television reported. Palestinian sources said, however, that the attack was a joint effort of Islamic Jihad and the Fatah's Popular Resistance Committees, media sources reported.

Police said the terrorists hit Tali Hatuel as she drove, causing her car to swerve from the road, then approached the car and executed her and her children at close range.

The attack occurred when the two gunmen, apparently residents of Dir el-Balah, began firing at Israeli cars on the road. Police said the mother was shot, causing the Hatuel's white Citroen to swerve off the road. The attackers approached the vehicle and shot the mother and her children with "killing shots" at close range. At least one civilian in another car was also injured.

I do not think it will happen any time soon. I am sure there are many Israelis that are very foolish in returning violence to Palestinians.

Why the rockets if you know that it is what angers Israel. You know this will make them respond so why tempt them? Stop the rockets and you will see, Israel will have no excuse to walk all over you. Then you will be the legitimate complain party should Israel do anything without cause – and I bet the international community would stand with you. However, your government chooses to remain ignorant and continues to provoke for the sake of ego (you must stop before we do talk).
You are just playing into Israel's hands. They will respond, and you would too if the roles were reversed.

And the Israelis do know that this is making the innocents pay for all this, since the Hamas leaders are well hidden. The average person pays for this, not really Hamas.
Plus the choking off all places where Palestine can breathe and do something decent for itself won't help your cause.

So where does this lead? Right where we are today....Israel won't stop since they wait for Hamas, and Hamas won't stop since they wait for Israel. Well, this has been llike this for how long?

You are always proud of saying civilization was born in that area. Why don't you show the world that this same civilization has not left that area, and that you are the better party for just stopping this circle. Writings Offer Fresh Insight on the President

“THE JEWS, I find are very, very selfish,” President Harry S. Truman wrote in a 1947 diary that was recently discovered on the shelves of the Truman Library in Independence, Mo., and released by the National Archives yesterday.

Written sporadically during a turbulent year of Truman’s presidency, the diary contains about 5,500 words on topics ranging from the death of his mother to comic banter with a British aristocrat. But the most surprising comments were Truman’s remarks on Jews, written on July 21, 1947, after the president had a conversation with Henry Morganthau [sic. Morgenthau], his Jewish treasury secretary. Morganthau called to talk about a Jewish ship in Palestine — possibly the Exodus, the legendary ship carrying 4,500 Jewish refugees who were refused entry into Palestine by the British, then rulers of that land.
,” Truman wrote. “The Jews have no sense of proportion nor do they have any judgement (sic) on world affairs. Henry brought a thousand Jews to New York on a supposedly temporary basis and they stayed.”
Truman then went into a rant about Jews:

“The Jews, I find, are very, very selfish. They care not how many Estonians, Latvians, Finns, Poles, Yugoslavs or Greeks get murdered or mistreated as D[isplaced] P[ersons] as long as the Jews get special treatment. Yet when they have power, physical, financial or political neither Hitler nor Stalin has anything on them for cruelty or mistreatment to the under dog. Put an underdog on top and it makes no difference whether his name is Russian, Jewish, Negro, Management, Labor, Mormon, Baptist he goes haywire. I’ve found very, very few who remember their past condition when prosperity comes.”
Yesterday, those comments startled scholars because Truman is known as a president who acted to help Jews in postwar Europe and who supported recognition of Israel in 1948, when his State Department opposed it.

“My reaction is: Wow! It did surprise me because of what I know about Truman’s record,” says Sara J. Bloomfield, director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. “Truman’s sympathy for the plight of Jews was very apparent.”

Israel doesn’t want a democratic independent Palestinian state without Hamas. If this was possible then not any excuse valid for the Israelis to stop Palestinians asking for their rights and what lawfully belong to them .Also in absolute freedom they will be able to breed like crazy with non stop.
Hamas not want a democratic Palestinian state where people live in peace and prosperity. Because without fear you can’t control people and implement your extreme fanatic policies.
The Arab rulers they hold the power without real and free elections need Israel attacking Palestinians, to keep the mind of their people full of hate and then no one will talk about freedom and democracy challenging the ruling class and the religious fanatics controlling the crowd with promises in heaven.
The Americans want Hamas and other extremists alive and not really dead because if the Middle East issue can resolve then the Israelis not have anymore the excuse that they lives are under threat and they should stop play the sheriff in the region protecting USA interests.

THE ISRAEL LOBBY AND U.S. FOREIGN POLICY

U.S. foreign policy shapes events in every corner of the globe. Nowhere is this truer than in the Middle East, a region of recurring instability and enormous strategic importance. Most recently, the Bush Administration’s attempt to transform the region into a community of democracies has helped produce a resilient insurgency in Iraq, a sharp rise in world oil prices, and terrorist bombings in Madrid, London, and Amman. With so much at stake for so many, all countries need to understand the forces that drive U.S. Middle East policy.

The U.S. national interest should be the primary object of American foreign policy. For the past several decades, however, and especially since the Six Day War in 1967, the centerpiece of U.S. Middle East policy has been its relationship with Israel. The combination of unwavering U.S. support for Israel and the related effort to spread democracy throughout the region has inflamed Arab and Islamic opinion and jeopardized U.S. security.

This situation has no equal in American political history. Why has the United States been willing to set aside its own security in order to advance the interests of another state? One might assume that the bond between the two countries is based on shared strategic interests or compelling moral imperatives. As we show below, however, neither of those explanations can account for the remarkable level of material and diplomatic support that the United States provides to Israel.

Instead, the overall thrust of U.S. policy in the region is due almost entirely to U.S. domestic politics, and especially to the activities of the "Israel Lobby." Other special interest groups have managed to skew U.S. foreign policy in directions they favored, but no lobby has managed to divert U.S. foreign policy as far from what the American national interest would otherwise suggest, while simultaneously convincing Americans that U.S. and Israeli interests are essentially identical.1

In the pages that follow, we describe how the Lobby has accomplished this feat, and how its activities have shaped America’s actions in this critical region. Given the strategic importance of the Middle East and its potential impact on others, both Americans and non-Americans need to understand and address the Lobby’s influence on U.S. policy.

Some readers will find this analysis disturbing, but the facts recounted here are not in serious dispute among scholars. Indeed, our account relies heavily on the work of Israeli scholars and journalists, who deserve great credit for shedding light on these issues. We also rely on evidence provided by respected Israeli and international human rights organizations. Similarly, our claims about the Lobby’s impact rely on testimony from the Lobby’s own members, as well as testimony from politicians who have worked with them. Readers may reject our conclusions, of course, but the evidence on which they rest is not controversial.

THE GREAT BENEFACTOR

Since the October War in 1973, Washington has provided Israel with a level of support dwarfing the amounts provided to any other state. It has been the largest annual recipient of direct U.S. economic and military assistance since 1976 and the largest total recipient since World War II. Total direct U.S. aid to Israel amounts to well over $140 billion in 2003 dollars.2 Israel receives about $3 billion in direct foreign assistance each year, which is roughly one-fifth of America’s foreign aid budget. In per capita terms, the United States gives each Israeli a direct subsidy worth about $500 per year.3 This largesse is especially striking when one realizes that Israel is now a wealthy industrial state with a per capita income roughly equal to South Korea or Spain.4

Israel also gets other special deals from Washington.5 Other aid recipients get their money in quarterly installments, but Israel receives its entire appropriation at the beginning of each fiscal year and thus earns extra interest. Most recipients of American military assistance are required to spend all of it in the United States, but Israel can use roughly twenty-five percent of its aid allotment to subsidize its own defense industry. Israel is the only recipient that does not have to account for how the aid is spent, an exemption that makes it virtually impossible to prevent the money from being used for purposes the United States opposes, like building settlements in the West Bank.

Moreover, the United States has provided Israel with nearly $3 billion to develop weapons systems like the Lavi aircraft that the Pentagon did not want or need, while giving Israel access to top-drawer U.S. weaponry like Blackhawk helicopters and F-16 jets. Finally, the United States gives Israel access to intelligence that it denies its NATO allies and has turned a blind eye towards Israel’s acquisition of nuclear weapons.6

In addition, Washington provides Israel with consistent diplomatic support. Since 1982, the United States has vetoed 32 United Nations Security Council resolutions that were critical of Israel, a number greater than the combined total of vetoes cast by all the other Security Council members.7 It also blocks Arab states’ efforts to put Israel’s nuclear arsenal on the International Atomic Energy Agency’s agenda.8

The United States also comes to Israel’s rescue in wartime and takes its side when negotiating peace. The Nixon Administration re-supplied Israel during the October War and protected Israel from the threat of Soviet intervention. Washington was deeply involved in the negotiations that ended that war as well as the lengthy "step-by-step" process that followed, just as it played a key role in the negotiations that preceded and followed the 1993 Oslo Accords.9 There were occasional frictions between U.S. and Israeli officials in both cases, but the United States coordinated its positions closely with Israel and consistently backed the Israeli approach to the negotiations. Indeed, one American participant at Camp David (2000) later said, "far too often, we functioned . . . as Israel’s lawyer."10

As discussed below, Washington has given Israel wide latitude in dealing with the occupied territories (the West Bank and Gaza Strip), even when its actions were at odds with stated U.S. policy. Moreover, the Bush Administration’s ambitious strategy to transform the Middle East – beginning with the invasion of Iraq – is at least partly intended to improve Israel’s strategic situation. Apart from wartime alliances, it is hard to think of another instance where one country has provided another with a similar level of material and diplomatic support for such an extended period. America’s support for Israel is, in short, unique.

This extraordinary generosity might be understandable if Israel were a vital strategic asset or if there were a compelling moral case for sustained U.S. backing. But neither rationale is convincing.

Academic Freedom Declines Across the United States [mentions Juan Cole, Rashid Khalidi, Joseph Massad, Nadia Abu El-Haj, Wadie Said]

Historian Tony Judt, Professor of European Studies at New York University , was scheduled to speak on the Israeli Lobby and American Foreign Policy at the Polish Consulate in New York City in October. Due to pressure from two Jewish American organizations, the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee, his talk was cancelled. Judt had also been scheduled to speak on the same topic at Manhattan College , but that speech was canceled due to similar pressures. The ADL and the AJC believe that Judt, a Jewish American, is too critical of State of Israel and as such, should not be allowed to speak publicly on that topic.
In September, University of Colorado's Chancellor Phil DiStefano announced that his university would consider firing tenured Ethnic Studies Professor Ward Churchill for his criticism of the Bush Administration and its handling of the events of 9/11. Churchill is currently being subjected to university censure for research misconduct by an appointed outside faculty review committee comprised of faculty members from chosen campuses around the country.
The Judt and Churchill cases are not unique. Since the events of 9/11 and the subsequent U.S.-led military invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq , U.S. campuses have become a battleground for an increasing number of publicly scrutinized attacks on professors whose teaching and research entail criticism of Zionism and of U.S. and Israeli policy in the Middle East . Each attack has involved blatant violations of academic freedom that have gone largely unchecked despite protest from faculty, unions, and scholarly organizations.
Perhaps more troubling is the case of Professor Douglas Giles. Unlike Churchill, untenured adjunct Giles was fired from Roosevelt University in Chicago in November 2005 for using the concept of Zionism as a demonstrative example in his Comparative Religion course. Giles was told by his dean that no classroom discussion of religion is permissible that may be construed as offensive to students of a particular faith.
More recently, University of Michigan Professor Juan Cole was denied a Middle East Studies position at Yale after pressure from neoconservative donors and media pundits who expressed objection to Cole's public criticisms of Israel. Cole is former president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America.
The most notorious of these cases occurred at Columbia University in New York in Spring 2005. Professors Hamid Dabashi, Rashid Khalidi, and Joseph Massad, among others, who teach at Columbia's Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures (MEALAC) Department, were investigated by a university-appointed non-faculty committee after The David Project accused them of anti-Semitism, and media pundits, elected officials, real estate developers and wealthy donors began demanding that Columbia dismiss them. In the end, Columbia's investigative committee was unable to substantiate the accusatory claims.
In the U.S. , academic freedom is a constitutionally guaranteed right meant to protect the role of the university as a site for producing knowledge where its aim is to serve the public good. As citizens or residents of the U.S. , academic scholars are endowed with the right to speak publicly, outside the academic sphere, on issues that may or may not pertain to their fields of disciplinary expertise. In addition, academic freedom stipulates that scholars, not elected officials, private interests, or media pundits, are the ones authorized and entitled to make collective decisions about academic knowledge, and about what may or may not be published and professed.
Regrettably, we are in a time and place where scholars are being intimidated from openly discussing subjects they teach or topics about which they feel strongly unless their ideas align with particular schools of thought, especially with regard to Zionism and to U.S. and Israeli policy in the Middle East. As we write, academics and university employees in the U.K. are being encouraged to spy on students who appear South Asian or Middle Eastern and who the British government suspects of supporting Islamic extremism. In addition to this, attempts are being made by neoconservatives to block both the hire of Wadie Said, son of the late Edward Said, by Wayne State University Law School in Michigan , and the tenure of anthropologist Nadia Abu El-Haj, author of a book that criticizes Israeli archaeology at Barnard College in New York .
If it is truly contributive to the public good, academia must be responsive to public issues and concerns and must treat scholars who speak publicly in accordance with accepted, usual and customary norms of scholarly practice. Political litmus tests should not be used as criteria for academic appointments, tenure, or promotion, nor should accusations of anti-Semitism be made indiscriminately against scholars who articulate legitimate criticisms of Zionism and of U.S. and Israeli policy in the Middle East . If elected officials, university administrations, mainstream journalists, and responsible citizens do not speak out and take action against these draconian measures, they will become guilty of facilitating the death of free speech in what may be its last bastion, academia.

United Nations, 1947, Resolution 181 approves the creation of Israel, the Jewish State
IsraPundit has an excellent article on UN resolution 181 that brought into existence the State of Israel. United Nations General Assembly resolution 181 called for the partition of the British-ruled palestine mandate [the 25% that was left of the mandated land, see the History page for details] into a Jewish State and an Arab State.

Today is the 55th anniversary of the UN vote on resolution 181, which approved the partition of the western part Palestine into a predominately Jewish state and a predominately Arab state. (It is vital to recall that the UN partition plan referred to western Palestine, to underscore that in 1921 the eastern part was ripped off the Jewish National Home by the British Government and handed over to the then Emir Abdullah.)
The partition plan was approved by 33 to 13, with 10 abstentions.

They all left in the middle of the night and settled on a remote island in the Pacific somewhere.... Since I became a grandmother on December 18th, I can't help but feel for all the Palestinians going through hell in Gaza right now, but my heart especially bleeds for all the new babies and their mothers. It takes time for a new mother's milk to come in, but when under stress this will not happen. Also, new mother's require sustenance in order to be able to produce milk, so most nursing mother's milk probably dried up long ago due to stress and lack of food and water. Now the Israeli's have bombed the supplies including baby formula, diapers and other necessities of life for newborn babies and toddlers. I only have one word for the current Israeli government: "Monsters".

There is no question that Jews suffered greatly from the despicable legacy of anti-Semitism, and that Israel’s creation was an appropriate response to a long record of crimes. This history, as noted, provides a strong moral case for supporting Israel’s existence. But the creation of Israel involved additional crimes against a largely innocent third party: the Palestinians.

The fact that the creation of Israel entailed a moral crime against the Palestinian people was well understood by Israel’s leaders. I saw a CNN personality describe a certain weapon used in Gaza as "smoke for cover or perhaps used for illumination". As an old Infantryman from the Viet Nam era, I can tell you exactly what he was trying to describe. He was seeing the use of "air-burst white phosphorous, WP, a.k.a. willie pete". In my day it was used primarily in its ground-burst form. Its one of the most terrible anti-personnel weapons ever devised. It can burn through just about anything when exposed to oxygen. Buildings, vehicles, and most importantly . . . people. It will not stop buring as long as it has an oxygen source. The oxygen in water makes it worse because at this point not only is it burning through your body, but steam also begins to scauld you. We were taught to forget about trying to put it out and simply go to work with our bayonets and "dig it out". I know that most Vets saw this also.

To make an analogy for the US citizens reading this message board:
If one of our bordering countries were to send a single rocket into a populated city in the US you would be urging the government to bomb the hell out of that country. Directly after 9-11 there was virtually no resistance or public outcry against the war in Afghanistan. Yet, because of religious fanaticism, anti-semitism, or some misplaced sympathy for the Palestinian people, you believe that any military action that Israel takes is a war crime. Remember that Hamas was elected by the Palestinian people and any misery, hardship, or suffering brought onto them which is caused by the acts of Hamas is their own responsibility. They elected a terrorist organization as their government and are therefore responsible for their current situation. If Hamas would stop committing violent acts against Israel and specifically targeting Israeli citizens, then Israel would reopen the crossings and help with the economic situation in Gaza. After living in Israel for several months including the 3 weeks of this war, I can personally attest to the attitude of the majority of Israelis living here.

When you plan to do things which you may not want folks with international relevance to see, you entice them to leave the area or outright bar them from being in the area.

This has been done in the past – bombing of the UN facility in Baghdad in 2003, which compelled the UN contingent to leave, and the Olympic Hotel where journalists were based.

By barring the international media from Gaza, you minimize the legitimacy of any reports coming from within Gaza – making it easier to label such as staged events or propaganda on the part of Hamas.

What we're seeing in Gaza is a power play on the part of the Israeli govt. They're demonstrating to the Gazans that their water, food, electricity, freedom of movement, access to medical care, and entire livlihood can be cutoff at will – and that their "freedom of choice" in the electoral process is not to the liking of the "democratic" Israeli govt.

As an occupying power, the Israeli forces have certain obligations under International Law, but they can flout such laws as long as they have a measure of control of the US veto in the Security Council – the one entity which can bring about action to stop the fighting between the Palestinians and Israelis.

These outrages against one another will lead to our end people. We must find a way to live together in peace.

I do hope the surrounding Arab countries' money is the only money spent on reconstruction of the region. It could be done as a good will gesture.

Yes Archie, our life is headed on a collision course with extermination it was written that is what would happen in the end. Another sad chapter in Arab-Israeli conflict; truth of the matter neither side cares for the future of their children. Message to President-elect Obama:

You promised change. Change the equation in U.S. policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian relations.

For nations who sincerely desire a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict without the annihilation of either of the warring parties, a carrot and stick approach is the only available option.

The U.S. together with the Europeans, neighboring Arab states and other like-minded nations should resolve to: (1) impose an arms embargo/blockade on the Israelis and Palestinians; (2) link economic aid to achieving a settlement; (3) restrict all other aid to humanitarian assistance; and (4) impose asset freezes and other sanctions on any nations that violate resolutions 1, 2 or 3.

By changing the equations you may find a solution that is the beginning of the end to the war against the self-proclaimed Islamic jihadists who point to U.S. support of Israel as evidence that the U.S. is anti-Islamic and use it to recruit other Muslims to their cause – which is to impose their worldview on others, not by the ballot box but by terror and force.

Until the whole world starts to take a stand and not let these criminals of the world survive, the people of Gaza will continue to be killed by two sides who act like little kids fighting over a piece of candy. Could you imagine what the world would do for Gaza if the militants were kicked out and they reached out for world aid in exchange for peace? The people of Gaza need to stomp their feet and demand no more bloodshed! They need to stop the flow of weapons into Gaza and knock down anybody who is against peace. Yes, if you are a militant, you are against peace. Don't act like you are for it, and blame Israel for all your problems. Look at yourself, you are the center of all your problems. It is time for the Middle East to grow up, and make a stand. If this would happen and the world was sure it will continue, Gaza would reap the benefits of the compassionate world ten fold. Lets make peace, but first we have to not let the militants speak for all Muslims. Let the majority of the good Muslims speak. I do mean there are millions of good law abiding Muslims who seek peace and not the jihad of the militants. All good Muslims need to put their feet down and start exposing the bad Muslims who are doing the world no good. If this continues for much longer, be prepared in the Middle East, because the Nuclear bombs will be going off, and then you all will have nothing to fight about. Yes, I am sure that is what Allah wants, don't you agree? Yes that last statement is pretty stupid, just like what is happening in the Middle East. Wake up, and take a stand against militancy and lets make the Middle East a place where peace is forever!

John, it seems you're one of the few who can see and think straight here. I agree with you 100%. Muslim countries play the blame game, but no one wants to take the responsibility for Islamic fanaticism. All Arab countries say: "It's not us, it's those fanatics !", forgetting that those people come from their countries and are trained using their money. To all Muslims: Stop whining and start acting. If you live peacefully, Israel and U.S. will not have to blow you to pieces.

Why was it hit? For the same reason hospitals and civilian shelters were hit. For the same reason Israeli soldiers herded civilians into buildings and then shelled them. For the same reason Israel bombed civilians and UN bases in Lebanon.

Why would we discuss why the UN building got hit and who hit it? Somebody out there actually saw Israel shoot at the UN building and hit it? I think it all assumption. You really can't believe anything in war. So the discussion of why it was hit is non relevant. It is war. Everything has a chance to be blown up, started on fire, etc. Just because it says UN on the building means all bombs will miss it? Bombs, shells, gunfire don't care whats in the way. Is the world not seeing this? Why has war all of a sudden come down to rules and regulations? Nonsense! It all comes down to two factions that are acting like children and it is time for them to grow up and quit putting the Gaza area people in harms way. Hamas and other militant groups are just as much to blame as Israel. Tit for tat. As long as the conflict is not resolved,the Gaza people will suffer. All the blaming from both sides is so fricken stupid. You are all so caught up your egos that you can't see past them. One of the main problems we have also is the US will not bargain with the so called terrorists groups, unless they denounce terrorism. Now tell me what would be so hard about that? It is kind of like telling your son to shut up, and he looks at you says go fly a kite. Just being childish! And the US demanding this before they sit down and talk with a so called terrorist group is absolutely ridiculous, just as it is ridiculous that the militant groups wont denounce terrorism. If god was able to, he would reprimand us all! I would hope that Obama changes this policy and says, yes, lets sit down and talk, and lets get this figured out this year! This YEAR! The people of Gaza have suffered enough from the stupid egotistical policies of the militants and the US! Come on US, have some balls and get this kick started! If you negoitiate without demanding certain conditions, maybe you can wallow thru it and get something you both can agree on.

Hamas uses the Palestinian people as human shields, they fire their weapons behind a hospital, store their artillery in mosques, and use civilian homes as gathering points for their TERRORISTS. Israel is the victim, the suffering of palestine is at the hands of HAMAS NOT ISRAEL.

But reducing everyone involved simply to factions and trivializing decades (and really centuries) of religious conflict is also a way of an ego to present itself. Don't forget that faith anchors everything in that region. Do you really think Islam and Judaism is reconcilable? Never in history have these two peacefully coexisted when there were comparable numbers of each sharing real estate. If I'm wrong I'd love to hear about an example. You'd think the answer to it all would be in it.

Dont you think it is time for all religious leaders to start to insert ideas of living peacefully with other religions? Teach it to the youngsters of the world to live in peace, instead of hate, holy war ect? It is time for the religious leaders to take control of what is being taught and make it good, not bad. Teach how to live with one another. Teach how to communicate with love, respect, and compassion. Looks like it is really up to how we teach our children. So far it isn't working in the middle east.

JT, there actually was a time when Muslim and Jewish people were able to live peacefully together. When Mohammed was actually alive he gave Jews full citizenship and equal rights in Muslim ruled lands. He believed that Jews and Muslims believed in the same God and it was only a difference in the family tree further down the line (Muslims follow the family tree of a different son of Abraham) that caused the difference in beliefs. My question is that if Mohammed himself gave Jews equal rights then why is it that modern day radical Muslims have so much animosity against Jews?

Regardless of the religions, assume that some people come and occupy your land, then put you in a corner and then surround you and don't let you have a normal life by imposing shortages of food, energy, ....

Regardless of any religions, these all are considered as unfair to the innocent people. I believe that considering the crimes in these 22 days they've committed zionists are not real Jews. On the other hand, those Alqaeda terrorists killing innocent people are not even real muslims.

As an another example, remember when Iraq attacked to Iran in 1980. Of course Iranians had the right to defend themselves regardless of the religion of the Iraqis and they did.

Indeed, all real faithful people around the world believe in the same God either Muslims, Christians or Jews and this can make a real peace and justice around the world.

John, I agree with that. I just think that it will require an enormous leap of faith on our part in many different people and their leaders after decades of complex issues and now Gaza. They would literally have to ask all those kids again to forget what happened to their parents and parents to again forgive of their dead children. If Islam was a religion as notoriously hell bent on forgiveness as eye-for-an-eye dogma, then yes. If the Middle east had a couple of more acres then maybe. If they didn't coincidently hold the same rock jealously sacred then who knows.

Jer, thanks for that example. I wonder though if one group being a small minority at that point didn't help. Is it not when they became more competitive over resources, power etc. that their relationship was ultimately corrupted? If not, I must convert back from a cynic. There might be some hope yet.

I know this is a strong opinion, but if the residents actually wanted to live a peaceful harmonious life they would elect a governing body with some sense and responsibility. The Gazan's are victims of a dictatorship.

Conflict, throughtout human history, has stemmed not from religious differences, ideological differences or racial differences. Conflict has always stemmed from economic differences; it always will.

In simpler terms; wars are fought between the "haves" and the "have nots".

A perception is facilitated whereby one group/person believes another has more. From here it is a short leap to percieving the "have" as an infringement on the "have not". From this, conflict ensues; unfortunately the conflict violent.

Everyone who ever attacked another felt justified. Otherwise they would not have attacked. We must cease attempting to blame one and justify the other.

This conflict will not end until human nature in general undergoes radical change. It is not the fault of the children of Judah or Mohammed. Nor are hindus, christians and non-believers the cause. Humans are!! And not those humans over there, but not these over hear...
