Harry Truman’s Forgotten Diary 1947

Writings Offer Fresh Insight on the President

“THE JEWS, I find are very, very selfish,” President Harry S. Truman wrote in a 1947 diary that was recently discovered on the shelves of the Truman Library in Independence, Mo., and released by the National Archives yesterday.

Written sporadically during a turbulent year of Truman’s presidency, the diary contains about 5,500 words on topics ranging from the death of his mother to comic banter with a British aristocrat. But the most surprising comments were Truman’s remarks on Jews, written on July 21, 1947, after the president had a conversation with Henry Morganthau [sic. Morgenthau], his Jewish treasury secretary. Morganthau called to talk about a Jewish ship in Palestine — possibly the Exodus, the legendary ship carrying 4,500 Jewish refugees who were refused entry into Palestine by the British, then rulers of that land.

YES, I knew about Truman’s disregard for the Jews although I confess that I too did not find this diary, when I researched in his library.
“I gave them the state they asked for,” he said, commenting on their ingratitude, in another document that I did read, “but they’re all still here.”
One by one the inner thoughts of the world’s great and goodly people about their Jewish fellow-humans are revealed, as the archives disgorge their cruel secrets.
Those who attended my Libel action against Deborah Lipstadt, where the defence lawyers (but not Lipstadt herself) accused me of anti-semitism, will recall that I invited their expert witness Prof Richard “Skunky” Evans to read (to himself) certain passages of the diaries of well-known statesmen, which I put to him while in the witness box, and I would then ask him questions.
I was going to ask if these were not statesmen of the utmost esteem and respectability; and whether he did not agree that their private comments on the Jews far exceeded any statement that I might have made.
Mr Justice Gray panicked, and refused to allow him to answer.

Yesterday, those comments startled scholars because Truman is known as a president who acted to help Jews in postwar Europe and who supported recognition of Israel in 1948, when his State Department opposed it.

“My reaction is: Wow! It did surprise me because of what I know about Truman’s record,” says Sara J. Bloomfield, director of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. “Truman’s sympathy for the plight of Jews was very apparent.”

Maybe there is no reason in war, AJ, but there is such a thing as basic common sense, even in war. Common sense would dictate that you invest in infrastructure to protect your citizens in a place that hasn't seen peace in 60 years. And humanity would dictate that you invest in protecting citizens before you invest in protecting your weapons.

I agree with Mr. Obama that is not acceptable to attack with rockets his home where his daughter sleeping. (His statement when he was visiting Israel) But I was expecting from him to have the decency to coming out and make the statement that is also unacceptable to attack by airplane and helicopters and with any other means for retribution the houses of others. When Georgia bombed South Osetia the world condemns the Russian response like an aggression in disproportion with the size of the Georgia attack to the Osetians. The Effect of Closure on Health Care in the West Bank and Gaza Strip

Following the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in September 2000, Israel imposed a comprehensive closure on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, denying Palestinians residing in the West Bank and Gaza Strip the right to enter occupied East Jerusalem and Israel. Israel also imposed an internal closure impeding movement within the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Restriction on freedom of movement is part of daily life for the population of the Occupied Territories. Restrictions are imposed by the Occupying army under the guise of Israeli security, and take various forms: checkpoints in the middle of the road, submitting people and their property to strict controls and humiliations, heaps of earth blocking access to roads, trenches encircling villages, curfews of variable duration and “military zones” to which all access is forbidden.

The internal closure enforced through the placement of at least 482 1 permanent military checkpoints, supplemented by an increasing number of randomly erected temporary road blocks and physical barriers, divide the West Bank into 300 clusters, the Gaza strip into 4. These divides have created a series of enclaves reminiscent of South African Bantustans only smaller and in several cases overpopulated. In the West Bank alone, OCHA has counted 734 2 barriers blocking Palestinian roads and towns and severely restricting movement to 2.3 million Palestinian, subdivided as follows 3 :

• 73 manned checkpoints
• 58 ditches blocking vehicular access
• 95 concrete blocks
• 34 road gates
• 33 wall gates for Palestinian
• 464 earth mounds blocking vehicular access

The establishment of these many obstructions enables the Israeli army to completely control and restrict the movement of people, their access to health facilities and the transport of goods and services within the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The effect of such closure on the provision of regular health care services and emergency medical aid has been devastating. Though the beginning of 2003 was marked by a progressive lifting of the curfews and a very gradual opening of certain villages in the West Bank in fact the violence, and occurrence of military incursions, has increased.

On 30 April 2003, the so called US sponsored “Road Map” to peace was established, with the declared purpose of a peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, an end of occupation of the Territories and the constitution of an independent Palestinian state by 2005. In parallel with this, since the beginning of the Second Intifada, the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian Territories has become more precarious and continues to deteriorate.

A concrete wall or Israeli termed “security fence” [25ft in height and 30-100m wide, encompassing trenches, barbed wire, electrified fencing, watch towers, electronic sensors, thermal imaging and video cameras, unmanned aerial vehicles, sniper towers, and roads for patrol vehicles], is rapidly being constructed through the West Bank. Started in June 2002, it is planned for completion by the end of the year. In many places this wall penetrates many kilometers into Palestinian Territories, placing further serious limits on the freedom of movement of the civilian population. Currently the wall carves off about 123,000 dunums 4 of land from the Palestinian side of the Green Line. This land amounts to about 2% of the West Bank, and contains at least 16 Palestinian villages and 12,000 residents, according to Israeli and Palestinian human rights groups and the World Bank. This number will rise to 395,000 if all sections of the wall are completed – 17.8% of the Palestinian population 5. The evidence strongly suggests that Israel is determined to create facts on the ground amounting to de facto annexation. Annexation of this kind, known as conquest in international law, is prohibited by the Charter of the UN and the Fourth Geneva Convention.

The wall is rapidly redrawing the socio political geography of the West Bank. Within their steadily shrinking increasingly fragmented space the local Palestinian population is experiencing an unraveling of economic and social networks, with health provision being among the most critical 6 . It goes without saying that the risk this wall poses of aggravating the humanitarian situation within the occupied territories is very real.

Medical Care: Access Denied: Road blockades have directly prevented patients in need from receiving emergency medical care

• More than 991 incidents of denial of access to Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees’ (UPMRC) ambulances have been reported 7 . UPMRC reports that during the Israeli invasion of spring 2002, their ambulances were stopped on average, three times per day. Since April 2002, mobile clinics have been regularly obstructed by total closures of all access roads; with medical staff forced to carry equipment over checkpoints, posing risks to both personnel and equipment.

• Between 1 September and 15 October 2003 OCHA reported:
22 cases of ambulances delayed from 1hr to 4 hr
21 cases of denial of access
4 cases of verbal/physical abuse on medical crew
4 cases of shooting at the ambulances

• On 6 November 2003, PRCS’ Health Incidents Reported 3 cases of denial of access: two in Khan Younis, and the third in Nablus where IDF soldiers stopped a PRCS ambulance reaching a patient in critical condition. The soldiers ordered the crew out of the ambulance and searched it. They detained the ambulance for 30 minutes denying access to the patient. A second attempt to access the injured person succeeded. However, by the time the ambulance reached the hospital, the woman patient was pronounced dead.

• Medical personnel often face serious difficulties in reaching workplaces: non-attendance at rural clinics due to closure has been reported at 35-40% in some cases 8. In 2003, this continued to be the primary reason for health service suspension 9 .

• PRCS reports severe understaffing both in Emergency Medical Service stations and in Primary Health Care clinics 10 . The United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) has hired 100 new staff members, and reports an increase of 6000 hours of extra work to help NGOs experiencing extreme difficulties in getting to work.

• General restrictions on movement, curfews and damage to the health sector have led to acute blood shortages in hospitals.

• Medical staff’s inability to access patients has affected implementation of Ministry of Health and UNRWA vaccination programs. The unavailability of vaccination programs in some isolated communities, and delays in delivery of programs, will increase the risk of preventable disease such as Hepatitis B. The Ministry of Health normally carries out vaccinations for Hepatitis B at birth, yet it is clear that in several areas, particularly those now isolated by the wall, a significant number of mothers will not have access to such services 11.

Attacks on medical services

Attacks on those attempting the provision of medical services are frequent in the Palestinian Territories. Attacks have been reported on medical personnel, establishments and health related vehicles. During the 2002 Israeli invasion, the UPMRC reported daily attacks, detentions and humiliation of their staff; on several occasions medical staffs were forced to strip and lay on the ground, others endured severe beatings. Other such incidents have continued on a regular basis:

• On Wednesday, January 28, 2004 Israeli forces withdrew from al-Zaitoun south of Gaza City leaving eight dead. One of the casualties was a medic, killed when the ambulance he was in, transferring injured to hospital, was hit by Israeli fire12.

• On 11 January 2004, a PRCS medic was beaten, detained and threatened with fatal harm by Israeli soldiers during a routine transfer of patients from Nablus to Ramallah Hospital. The ambulance was carrying a child with a cardiac condition and a disabled person suffering leg injuries 13.

• On September 9 2003, in Nablus, Israeli soldiers stopped a Palestinian Medical Relief ambulance on its way to Salem village. They used it, and the first aid volunteers it was transporting, as a human shield. Standing behind the ambulance, they opened fire on Palestinians. When the ambulance driver protested, they viciously attacked him. The ambulance and staff were only released after much negotiation from Israeli Physicians for Human Rights. Earlier on the same day, Israeli soldiers detained a patient and driver of an ambulance for four hours 14

According to article 18 of the 4th Geneva Convention, civilian hospitals must be respected and protected. Under the principle established by this article, not only must hospital facilities not be the target of military attacks, but the belligerents have the general obligation to do everything possible to protect them from any attack.

• On 2 March 2003, the Nasser hospital at Khan Younis was targeted during a military operation. This was one of fifteen such attacks since the beginning of the second Intifada. On each occasion, patients, visitors and medical personnel have been wounded by firing which has penetrated inside the hospital.

• Since the spread of the current Intifada at least 290 hospitals and clinics have been attacked and damaged.

Between the 29th of September 2000 and the 14th of October 2003, the Israeli occupying forces carried out the following attacks on Palestinian medical services:

• 121 ambulances were attacked and damaged 36 ambulances were damaged beyond repair
• 991 cases of ambulances being denied access to the injured

• 25 medical personnel were killed by Israeli soldiers

• 425 medical personnel were injured

• 71 emergency personnel were arrested

• 290 counts of hospitals and clinics attacked & damaged

Palestinian civilians denied access to health care facilities

o Restriction of passage through checkpoints has prevented Palestinians requiring medical treatment from accessing health care services. Over 70% of the Palestinian population lives in rural areas that cannot provide hospital services; closure therefore severely restricts the majority of the population from secondary and tertiary health care facilities.

o More than 83 deaths have occurred due to prevention of access to emergency health care or treatment of chronic diseases, 27 of these were children, 19 newborns. The victims were not involved in clashes. During the last Israeli invasion, Palestinian ambulances were repeatedly denied access to the sick and wounded and in many cases the injured were left to bleed to death. In other instances, those requiring treatment (for example for cancer or kidney failure), suffered extreme hardship when they were prevented from leaving their villages to receive treatment.

o In the last three years there have been numerous cases of Palestinian women in labor delayed at checkpoints or refused permission to reach medical facilities resulting in 52 women giving birth at checkpoints. Since the beginning of the Intifada a 29% increase in home deliveries in the West Bank has been recorded.

o At least 90 Palestinians requiring medical treatment abroad have been prevented from leaving the country.

o Hospitals report a decline in access to services, for example St Luke’s hospital in Nablus reports a 49% decline in GP patients, a 73% decline in specialty services, and a 53% decline in surgery. The only ophthalmic hospital in the West Bank is in Jerusalem; closure has therefore prevented West Bank inhabitants from accessing this specialized service.

o The Ministry of Health also reports a 60% decline in implementation of school health programs.

Blockade on raw materials

The Israeli blockade on goods entering the Occupied Palestinian Territories has further serious ramifications for Palestinian health services 15 .

o The Israeli Ministry of Defense banned imports of raw materials required by pharmaceutical companies, and on 4 June 2001 pharmaceutical companies reported a supply of less than one month’s raw materials required for production of medicines 16.

o Health providers have faced great difficulties in the distribution of medical supplies to Palestinian towns and villages.

o In November 2003 Medicins du Monde reported that UNFPA delivery kits had been held up at Tel Aviv customs since April, and were unable to reach the West Bank. The branch of the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Nablus has been waiting for delivery kits since February 2003, during which time they have been delayed. 17

o Medical aid is consistently detained by Israeli border control in both Jordan and Egypt.

Israeli restrictions have closed the pharmaceutical market to international competition therefore the prices paid by the Palestinian Ministry of Health are considerably expensive. The delay of drug deliveries from suppliers and the lack of contact between MoH in Gaza and the MoH in the West Bank, due to movement restrictions have a direct impact on drug procurement. Towards the end of 2002 MoH reported that its facilities were operating at about 30% of their capacity.

Health providers are consistently facing great difficulties with distribution; in the last months the situation has become critical in the villages of the North-western part of the West Bank (Tulkarm, Qalqilya, and Jenin) due to the construction of the Separation Wall.

The impact of the Israeli Apartheid Wall is having disastrous affects upon both the health and social status of Palestinian communities and damaging the entire structure of the Palestinian Health Care System. By cutting deep into the West Bank, encircling Palestinian communities and severing infrastructure connecting them to public services, including water and sanitary networks as well as regional and national health care facilities, the Wall is simultaneously sundering as well as foisting a greater burden on a health care system already operating under considerable strain. 18

Neither side denies that they use propaganda. Both sides spin the truth in their favor to win public sympathy, and both sides have valid grievances. The truth is somewhere in the middle, but I'm pretty sure that the Israelis would support our right to exchange these diverse opinions on a CNN message board, and that Hamas would should down CNN.

in 2006 in the last three days of the war with Hezbolla the Israeli Army dropped over 2000000 ( yes two million bombs on lebanon and I have seen even 3 million in other reports) this is after they agreed on the cease fire.

Mr Egeland described the fresh statistics as "shocking new information".

"What's shocking and completely immoral is: 90% of the cluster bomb strikes occurred in the last 72 hours of the conflict, when we knew there would be a resolution," he said.

The UN ceasefire resolution which ended the month-long conflict between Israel and Hezbollah was agreed by the Security Council on Friday, 11 August, and came into effect on Monday, 14 August.

Mr Egeland added: "Cluster bombs have affected large areas – lots of homes, lots of farmland. They will be with us for many months, possibly years.

"Every day, people are maimed, wounded and killed by these weapons. It shouldn't have happened."

So is this a regard for human life. Please !

Do other countries think the US has it so good here, they are jealous? Why, I ask! Things are bad here, just in a different way. A man on another blog asked a couple of us mothers, if we had more or less hope in the world because of this crisis. This was my answer, I am posting it because I think I goes along with what you said.

My perspective has changed, but only to fear. I fear what we are doing to one another as a race. I fear that hatred will overtake love, I fear that other countries will get pulled into this, which in return, will cause more innocent mothers to lose their children.
I fear for my son, for the world he lives in, and the hatred he may experience at the hands of ignorance.
I don’t think I have less hope, i just fear what the world is becoming.

I just want to echo support you have been given.

Every time there is an incursion/war between Israel and one or more of its Arab neighbors, the attention of everybody around the world focuses, perhaps only naturally, on the immediate conflict at hand. But at times when there is no bloody crisis at hand, all the good intentions to bring the Arab-Israeli conflict to a peaceful end do not, unfortunately, go beyond good intentions to translate into a meaningful peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors. And now, of course, there is the additional problem that we no longer have only Arab parties in conflict with Israel but also, and just as importantly, Iran, using its allies/friends–Hamas, Hizbollah and Syria–to destablize the situation just so that Iran could "fish in muddy waters": for Iranian leaders, the murkier the waters, the better! Because it is only through creating as much chaos as possible that they see any way to advance their on ends on this issue. Meanwhile, all proposals to bring peace between Israel and Arabs end with obstacles on their path due to one problem or another. Either Hamas refuses even to recognize Israel's right to exist (and if they don't even recognize such a basic right of their adversary, how do they even think about negotiating peace with a party even whose right to exist they are denying??!!), or at times the specific Israeli leaders in charge are hardliners who are more interested in crushing the Palestinians' movements than in making peace with any Palestinian authority (and this is precisely the reason why I hope Benjamin Netanyahue does not win the next Israeli elections in February–I am particularly in favor of Tzipi Livni, specially because I think her experience in Mossad enables her particularly well to deal with all aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict). No matter what is done at this specific moment to crush Hamas' military capabilities, I believe that, unfortunately, there will continue to be Palestinians who will be willing to tie explosives to their own bodies and get killed but also kill Israelis in the process; both Hizbollah and Hamas will also continue to exist, counting the moment so that, at some future occasion, they can engage Israel in bloody conflict again; Iran will also continue to be under the control of the same dictatorial regime as at present, whose leaders will continue to promote bloody conflict with Israel so that they can "fish in murky waters." Perhaps Israel's military will really succeed in crushing Hamas' military capabilities at this particular moment. However, I BELIEVE THAT ANY LASTING SOLUTION WILL DEPEND ON A FINAL PEACE AGGREEMENT BETWEEN ISRAEL AND ITS ARAB NEIGHBORS. AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH PRESSURE THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT AND THE EUROPEAN UNION MAY PUT ON ALL SIDES INVOLVED, A FINAL PEACE AGGREEMENT DEPENDS ON THE READINESS, AS WELL AS WILLINGNESS, OF THE LEADERS OF ISRAEL AS WELL AS ITS ARAB NEIGHBORS TO MAKE LASTING PEACE WITH EACH OTHER. Perhaps, specially if Tzipi Livni wins the elections in Israel, we will see a very important step in this direction–peace between Israel and Syria, something which will be absolutely and completely impossible if Netanyahu wins. May it be, God willing, that Livni wins.

3. genocide is the systematic and deliberate slaughter of a people. The Israelis are not rounding up every man, woman and child and sticking them in gas ovens. If (God Forbid) the Israelis wanted to wipe out every Gazan Israel would just carpet bomb the place. Instead Israel sends in its troops because it is trying to fight Hamas not civilians. Unfortunately Hamas hides behind the skirts of its women and children.
4.Human rights means respecting everybodys right to live. For 8 years Hamas bombarded Israel with rockets.The people in the south could not live tnormal lives. Even during the so called six month cease fire the sirens regularly went. We live here so we know. Our lives were disrupted. How would you like to spend your day wandering whether you should go buy your groceries or maybe not in case the bloody sirens go off?
6. Common sense is not consistently stamping and twisting a lion's tale for 8 years and thinking the lion won't react. Common sense is looking after your people and building a state instead of trying to destroy someone elses.

As regards to occupied territories. Not a single Israeli or Jew in Gaza for the last 3 years. Whe Israel left the border crosiings were all open. They were closed cos of the suicide bombers. The only reason why Israel has ventured back is to staop Hamas bombing us.

With regard to nuclear weapons Israel has never threatened to wipe ot any other country (unlike Iran).

I guess, Logan, that we can have such a long debate about the questions you pose here, that we can write a whole book about our debate! But, just to make a short comment to respond to the last point you make (why Americans think Israel should have nuclear weapons and defend its territory, but not "the others"): I guess that from my name, you can guess I am from Iran, one of "the others" that I assume you include in your question. As you yourself know, Israel has never, absolutely never, used nuclear weapons even against its worst enemies. Never. It might very well sound hypocritical if we admit, for example, even Pakistan's right to have nuclear weapons, but not Iran's! But my point is that I just cannot, cannot, trust the current regime controlling Iran enough even now, much less if they actually have the capability to build nuclear weapons! Even some Iranian friends of mine who live in Iran but travel to Europe to see me (I have the citizenship of Spain and no longer even travel to Iran at all), tell me that if Iran obtains the capability to build nuclear weapons, its leaders will surely use that ability to "force the rest of the world to convert to Shi'ite Islam, but also to recognize Iran's Supreme Leader as the Leader of the whole world!" Even if this assertion sounds exaggerated, you can be sure that Iran's leadership, if it gains access to nuclear weapons technology, will use it to force as many concessions of the rest of the whole world, as possible.

With respect to your question about why should Israel have a right to denfend its country but "the others" should not, I would like to point out that "those others" are not just defending their territory: THEY ARE TRYING TO ACTUALLY FORCE ISRAEL TO DISAPPEAR FROM THE MAP OF THE WORLD. Israel's response may, at first hand, appear out of proportion. But put yourself in the position of the Israelis. What would you do if your country had only 6 million people but was surrounded by hundreds of millions of enemies, many of whom actually desire to WIPE IT OFF THE MAP OF THE WORLD, and many of whom were actually, each and every day of every week of every year, hitting your country with tens of rockets?! I would certainly not just sit down without reacting!

Israel is a nation built on the ideology of war and occupation. Israelis know that palestine is not their land; accordingly, even if there is no resistance, they will always feel menaced. Threat is deeply rooted in their psyche. The problen worsens everyday palestinians resist because israelis feel that history will never forget that they occupy a land and that a time will come when they will have to return back to poland, russia, etc. Only see their names: some are called Linda, others polansky, etc. Isn’t this a bastard state?

As a person who has never been to Israel or Gaza, I don't give two hoots about who did what to whom 50 or 100 years ago. I only want future generations to live in a peaceful, secure world. I'm pretty sick and tired of all the fighting which causes more fighting. Hamas would not stop firing missiles at Israel. If someone were firing missiles at my town, I would demand my military stop them. I don't consider self defense a war crime. Hamas hides and shoots this stuff from populated areas. Shame on them. They wouldn't let in unbiased monitors so the people of Gaza could have peace. They still won't. They are still firing rockets. And, if you pray the wrong way or call by a different name, you are the enemy. More groups to be killed. Israel isn't totally blameless either. Guess what – most of us are just sick of the hatred, killing, and waste of lives. Unfortunately the fanatics of the world don't care. They don't want peace. They feed upon hate and blowing things up. Who is to blame for what? Who cares. The world needs to work together to bring about the end to violence.

1.Whose leaders hate us far more than they love their own people
2. Whose fellow Arab States have let them down so badly by not opening up the Egyptian border and bringing in food, gas, water and all the neccesities needed. The wealthy Arab States, through the Egyptian border could have turned Gaza into a sophisticated, self sufficient state. But they chose not to. Instaed the Gazans rely on their "enemy" Israel to provide them with all their necessities. How sad that they have to rely on the Jews to live.
3. I feel sorry for the Gazans who have been held hostage by Hamas.
4. I pray that sensible Palestinians will emerge with whom we can make a deal. Fed up with swapping atrocity stories. Ultimately the Good Lord or Allah or karma with divine sense of humour has decreed that the sons of Abraham's descendants Ishmael and Isaac should be neighbours.
So stop spouting aggressive, warlike empty threats. We are not menaced or scared. Start thinking of how we can live together now in peace, so that our children, Arabs and Jews can have better lives and not be slain needlessly.
Till you can arrive at this conclusion and I recognise it is a painful one, I will not be menaced by you...I will merely feel you and your kind are deserving of pity.

The Saudi plan has actually not been adopted or accepted by Hamas, as it involves recognising Israel. Believe you me if Hamas were prepared top accept the Saudi peace plan we would certainly bemore than happy to talk....
Fatah is in negotiation with Israel. I don't think that all of Gaza is Hamas. Hamas did round up 100 Fatah supporters and massacre them, but there are lots of Fatah supporters still in Gaza. And if thewhole Arab world is Hamas why isn't the Egyptian border open and aid flooding in. Why have all the arab countries been so quiet?

With regard to occupation. 3 years ago we pulled out of Gaza. Not a Jew or Israeli in site. The checkpoints were open. Gaza was there for Arabs to rule the way they wanted....The suicide bombs started. We didn't starve the Gazans...we just attempted to protect our own people. We put up with being bombed and rocketed for 8 years....

To answer your questions it is all up to negotiation and to the partners negotiating with us. I am not an elected politician just believe in the power of soccer! However....

1. Personally I would be in favor with sufficient guarantees and would withdraw from the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

2. With sufficient guarantees I would dismantle the settlements in the West Bank.

3. I believe in compensation but not right of return. If you have right of return you undermine 2 State solution. So compensation yes, but return no. Also would like to see Arab lands compensating the Jews who were forced to leave but thats another topic.

Thats honestly how I feel. But I do not necessarily feel that all of this should be on offer all at once. it should be conditional on not being shelled and over a period of years. We pulled out of Gaza and look what happened. Suicide bombings and constant shelling. This is a personal view....

Barham: all those questions are very valid and they are also OPEN TO NEGOTIATIONS. Negotiations is the key word here. Hamas does not wish to negotiate with Israel because that would be implicitly recognizing Israel.

And personally I believe that, with the exception of Jerusalem, the other 2 points are far from unsurmountable. Jerusalem is another matter. The 1948 UN partition plan called for internationalizing the city and its surroundings. Tha plan, by the way, was rejected by the Arab side and that led to the war of 1948.

I do not understand the Muslim/Palestinian attitude. It is true that the world, in general, thinks that the war should stop. It is pointless and can only harm both sides. But I do not think it is beacasue they are taking sides. Yes, the Israelis are stonger and inflicting inhumane damage on the Palestinians. However, suicide bombing and firing rockets also inflict inhumane damage damage on innocent people.

It is time to stop the violence and find some other method. Violence does not work. Wanting to stop hurting innocent peole is not the same as taking sides.

An Israeli woman in her eighth month of pregnancy and her four daughters were killed this afternoon when two terrorists opened fire at Israeli cars traveling on the Kissufim-Gush Katif road in the Gaza Strip. Soldiers shot the terrorists dead, but only after an explosive device at the scene detonated, wounding three soldiers, two of them with moderate-to-serious injuries.

I agre that war criminals ned to be brought to court, and maybe some Israeli's will be. I just don't think that getting people tried as war criminals is a reasonable objective of war. I can't see that the people of Gaza have anything to gain from this war. If there only objective is to get war criminal trials then that seems like a large price for very little. What else can their objective be??

the flaw in your argument is that Hamas is not defending the people of Gaza from occupation. They are 'shooting at policemen' as I said earlier. That is an entirely different thing. HOw can you say they are defending their people and at the same time keep pointing us to scenes of the Gazians being killed. It doesn't make sense.

My question is this. A reminder first. My father is 1/2 native american. So I have experience in this.
You said to give back your land. Since this is something that happened 0 years ago, did you yourself have to leave? If so, then when and where did you go?
Also, it seems to me that the people that had to leave their land is 60 years old + by now. So is it the ancestors of the the people that left the land saying "our Land'?
I am just wondering because here in the United States, the Native American people have moved on from this. My Grandfather's sister was killed in a land battle, but I do not hate anyone because of it. He lost his land, but I do not harbor any resentment. My family and I have tried to work hard, make a life for ourselves, and teach our children to do the same.

I watched the videa. But since when is anyone here accepting a CNN newsreader as an authority. There is probably some truth in it, but targeting people smuggling weapons is hardly the same thing as firing rockets indiscriminately at innocent people. Of course Gaza is going to dig tunnels. It's too bad they didn't use them for humanitarian rather than military purposes.

I think the Israeli's should have captured rather than kiled the weapons smugglers.

do you notice the difference of ideologies between yourself and some of us who hold different views from you?! And I mean not just between you and Jewish people but, rather, between you and me, too. I myself am of Muslim and Iranian origins. But if you have read my comments above, you would have noticed that what I am saying is that BOTH Israeli AND Arab leaders have to be willing, ready and able to make peace with each other. I think Harvey and some of the others commenting on this blog, would agree with me.

But what you are saying is that Hamas is doing everything O.K., and Israel is to blame for absolutely everything wrong that happens, and responsible for absolutely all the bloodshed. If all of us start thinking like you do, then we will just go on and fight each other until either Israel, or all of its Arab neighbors, are completely destroyed. There will be no chance for any peace whatsoever until one of the sides is completely destroyed.

In order to even start thinking about peace, we must first of all have a situation in which people who think that way change their mentality, and be willing and able to look to themselves first and accept that they also share part of the blame, and not think that everything they do and say is O.K. and the other side is the one that bears all the responsibility for all the horror and all the bloodshed that goes on. The only way to get anywhere and improve the situation is for all of us, on all sides, to accept that all sides have done wrong, and be able to look into ourselves and first improve what we have done

But I don't understand what you are saying. I agree that if war crimes are committed, then it is everyone's duty to see that the criminals are brought to justice.

But what do Iraq and Lebanon have to do with it? And why do you say the rockets do no harm. Inocent people do get kiled by them. They may injure Israel's pride but unfortunately pride is playing too big a part in this. Pride is very selfish and not worth anyone's life.
